Halcyon Days

Sitting in front of My computer again trying to figure a way to express the events and thoughts of the past week into something that might make sense.

It not be possible.

Families just do not make sense.
I had to spend the past week with my in-laws and relatives.
It was like being in a Japanese version of National Lampoon's Vacation and Caddyshack rolled into one long week of drama, drunkenness and occasional despondency.

I am certain that pretty much everyone has sampled the family gathering and come away from it altered and mentally fatigued. It all starts out with the road trip.

Getting There.
You've done it before. Packed your bags, strapped the children in, secured the pet, made sure that you took along more things than you will ever need, shut down and locked up the house or apartment and ventured forth on the perilous highways and byways in a four wheeled cage on a trip that would challenge the sanity of anyone except maybe Gandhi or Mother Theresa.
Why is it that people on the roads during vacation time behave even more stupidly than usual?
I always thought that time away from work ought to be spent in a leisurely manner.
Many others don't think the same way as I do. It amazes me just how recklessly and badly people drive. This often trips me up and I begin a stream of expletives in two languages that often puzzels my wife, except when she is doing the driving and the cursing. After much time playing word games, doing sing a long telling jokes and making pit stops you get to where you're going...

Oh, dear. I love a good road trip, and a great vacation. Somehow, visits to the relatives never seem to qualify as either. Glad you made it back sane and sound, though.:)

Which brings to question: Is it better to be going away? Or getting there?
